  1. Breaker selection: any standard size that protects the conductor and does not exceed 40 A MOCP.
  2. Conductor selection: usable ampacity at least 22 A under the installed conditions.
  3. Verify the chosen breaker/conductor pair in the compatibility calculator.
  4. Update the panel schedule and disconnect labeling to the new nameplate values.

Starting point: breaker ≤ 40 A MOCP with conductor ≥ 22 A MCA. Without those two numbers, stop and read the nameplate.

    Every condenser swap needs a fresh MCA/MOCP check even when tonnage looks unchanged.

  • Conductor must meet MCA after conditions of use

    Long outdoor runs, ambient correction and termination temperature can force an upsize above a short-whip example.

  • Account for heat strips separately

    Air handlers with electric heat often need additional circuits that never appear on the condenser nameplate.

How many amps does a 3 ton AC need?
Whatever the nameplate says. Two 3-ton units can publish different MCA and MOCP values. Tonnage is not an ampacity table.
Can I reuse the old AC breaker on a new condenser?
Only if the new MOCP still allows that breaker rating and the existing conductor still meets the new MCA under current conditions.
Is MOCP the same as the breaker I must install?
MOCP is the maximum. You may use a smaller standard breaker if it still meets the equipment instructions and protects the conductor.
