  1. Step 1

    Record the existing service rating

    Start from the service or feeder rating that is actually installed, not from empty panel slots.

  2. Step 2

    Build the existing dwelling load

    Assemble the loads already present using the existing-dwelling method inputs the calculator asks for.

  3. Step 3

    Add the proposed load correctly

    Enter the new EVSE, HVAC or appliance at the value the method and equipment instructions require — including EMS limits when listed equipment sets a lower demand.

  4. Step 4

    Compare total to the service rating

    If the calculated load exceeds the existing service, the options are a service upgrade, load management, or reducing the added demand.

  5. Step 5

    Size the new branch circuit separately

    Passing the service check does not size the new breaker and conductor. Run the branch-circuit continuous-load and wire-size checks next.

Start with the service that exists

The existing-dwelling question is not just the new load. It is the calculated dwelling load after the addition compared with the service already installed.

A 100 A service with a modest existing load may still fail once a large continuous load is added.

Energy management can change the input

A listed energy management system can limit EVSE demand. When present, the limited output is the value to enter.

Without that equipment, use the charger nameplate and the edition-specific rule shown by the calculator.

    A panel can have open slots and still be overload on paper once continuous loads are added.

  • Use EMS output when it is listed

    A listed energy management system can limit EVSE demand. Enter the limited value, not the unrestricted nameplate, when that equipment is part of the design.

  • 100 A services fail more often than people expect

    A modest existing load plus a 48 A continuous EVSE add frequently exceeds a 100 A service once demand and continuous treatment are applied.
