Residential Load Calculation 220.82

The optional dwelling method is a sequence, not a single multiplier. General load is assembled and demand-factored first; heating and cooling are handled afterward, and only the largest applicable HVAC item is added. Get the order wrong and the service size is fiction.

The Procedure

5 steps, in the order the code applies them.

  1. Step 1

    Assemble the general load

    Include general lighting from floor area, the small-appliance and laundry circuit allowances, and the fixed appliances that belong in the general load.

  2. Step 2

    Add EVSE under the adopted edition

    Enter EV charging per the edition in force. The 2023 path includes a dedicated EVSE treatment that earlier editions do not share the same way.

  3. Step 3

    Apply the optional-method demand factor

    Demand-factor the general load in the order the optional method requires before bringing HVAC into the total.

  4. Step 4

    Add the largest heating or cooling item

    After the general load, add the largest of the applicable heating or cooling loads — not both at full value when the method takes the larger.

  5. Step 5

    Convert VA to service amperes

    Divide by the service voltage to get amperes, then compare with standard service sizes and local utility minimums.

The order matters

General lighting, small-appliance and laundry circuits, appliances and EVSE form the general load before the demand factor is applied.

Heating and cooling are handled after that, and only the largest applicable item is added.

Edition-sensitive EVSE

The calculator treats the 7200 VA EVSE minimum as a 2023-path input and warns when an earlier edition is selected.

Confirm the EVSE rule against the edition adopted by the AHJ before the service size is submitted.

  • Do not mix optional and standard methods midstream

    Pick 220.82 or the standard method and stay with it. Mixing demand factors from both produces a number neither method recognizes.

  • Nameplate before brochure watts

    Appliances enter at nameplate ratings. Marketing recovery rates and cooking watts are the wrong inputs.

  • Floor area is the lighted area rule in use

    Use the floor-area basis the adopted edition and AHJ expect. Understating area quietly understates the general lighting load.
