Where 1 in EMT Is Used
EMT installation context for 1 in.
EMT is the default indoor commercial and residential exposed raceway. Searches for 1 in EMT usually want a quick conductor count for THHN — then discover a mixed-size pull or compact vs concentric stranding changes the answer.
EMT fill does not decide whether EMT is allowed outdoors, in wet locations, or where physical protection rules require RMC/IMC. Pick the raceway type for the environment first.
What Changes the Count

Include the EGC in fill
Fill counts every conductor, including the equipment grounding conductor. Derating uses a different count.
Mixed sizes need area sums
Do not average AWG sizes. Sum each group’s tabulated area, then compare with the permitted area for 1 in EMT.
Jam and pull difficulty
A fill pass can still be a hard pull. Plan bends, length and lubrication separately from percent fill.
Derating is separate
More current-carrying conductors can force wire upsizing even when EMT fill still passes.
