Same-Size THHN Counts
Uniform conductor examples for quick planning. Mixed pulls need the calculator.
| Conductor size | Insulation | Largest passing count | Fill at that count | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 21 | 38.2% | Uniform-size example only |
| 12 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 16 | 39.9% | Uniform-size example only |
| 10 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 10 | 39.6% | Uniform-size example only |
| 8 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 5 | 34.3% | Uniform-size example only |
| 6 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 4 | 38% | Uniform-size example only |
| 4 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 2 | 30.9% | Uniform-size example only |
| 2 AWG | THHN / THWN-2 | 1 | 21.7% | Uniform-size example only |
What the 3/4 in EMT Count Actually MeansThe table is a same-size THHN planning chart computed from Chapter 9 areas at the 40 percent (three or more) limit unless noted. Mixed sizes, different insulation, compact stranding, nipples and cable assemblies need the calculator — not this uniform-size grid.

Where 3/4 in EMT Is Used
EMT installation context for 3/4 in.
EMT is the default indoor commercial and residential exposed raceway. Searches for 3/4 in EMT usually want a quick conductor count for THHN — then discover a mixed-size pull or compact vs concentric stranding changes the answer.
EMT fill does not decide whether EMT is allowed outdoors, in wet locations, or where physical protection rules require RMC/IMC. Pick the raceway type for the environment first.
What Changes the Count
Checks that matter for EMT — not a shared six-bullet list.
Include the EGC in fill
Fill counts every conductor, including the equipment grounding conductor. Derating uses a different count.
Mixed sizes need area sums
Do not average AWG sizes. Sum each group’s tabulated area, then compare with the permitted area for 3/4 in EMT.
Jam and pull difficulty
A fill pass can still be a hard pull. Plan bends, length and lubrication separately from percent fill.
Derating is separate
More current-carrying conductors can force wire upsizing even when EMT fill still passes.
