OCPD: Overcurrent Protective Device
OCPD means overcurrent protective device: the breaker or fuse selected to open a circuit when current exceeds the limit the circuit is allowed to carry.
The breaker handle is not the whole design. An OCPD has to carry the calculated load, protect the conductor after derating and terminal limits, and stay within the markings on the equipment it serves.
What OCPD means in practice
In everyday field language, OCPD usually means the breaker or fuse ahead of the circuit.
The device is chosen by rating, device type and equipment markings, not merely by the load current written on the appliance.
The load side of the check
The OCPD must be large enough to carry the calculated load without nuisance operation under normal use.
Continuous loads can raise the minimum device size, while equipment instructions can set a specific maximum.
The conductor side of the check
The same OCPD must be small enough to protect the conductor after ampacity corrections, adjustment factors, terminal limits and small-conductor rules are considered.
This is why a breaker that looks normal on a shortcut chart can still fail a breaker-wire compatibility check.

Sizing a branch circuit
The OCPD must be rated for the non-continuous load plus the required treatment of continuous load, then matched to a conductor that can be protected at that rating.
Checking conductor protection
A conductor that passes ampacity still has to be protected by an OCPD allowed for that size, material, terminal rating and conditions of use.
Choosing a standard rating
When calculated current lands between standard device sizes, the standard ampere ratings and any next-size permission decide whether the next device can be used.
Reading equipment labels
Some equipment states minimum circuit ampacity, maximum overcurrent protection, fuse-only protection or other limits that govern over a generic chart.

Do not size from the breaker first
Start with load and conductor conditions. A familiar breaker-to-wire pairing can fail when ambient temperature, conductor count or terminal rating reduces usable ampacity.
Continuous load changes the minimum
For continuous loads, size the OCPD from the required continuous-load treatment before selecting the standard device rating.
Small conductors have hard limits
The 14, 12 and 10 AWG ranges have overcurrent limits that often control even when the insulation-column ampacity looks higher.
Know what is outside the check
A simple OCPD sizing check does not settle interrupting rating, available fault current, selective coordination, GFCI/AFCI protection, motor rules or HVAC nameplate rules.
